National
Azabu Supermarket has an impressive range of imported foods including
many items which are difficult to find in Tokyo. Some of the
items I have seen there that vegetarians and health food orientated
people will delight in finding are listed below:
• Frozen
vegetarian burgers, pizzas, pies, burritos, enchiladas, lasagna
and so on. (Amy's and other brands.)
• An
impressive range of beans, organic and otherwise
• Flax
seed oil
• Yogurt
with Lactobacillus acidophilus and bifidobacteria yogurt, goat's
milk yogurt & cheese
• A
wide range of cheeses
• Some
organic nuts and dried fruit
• Soy
milk icecream
• Fruit,
veges, herbes and spices you won't find in regular Japanese supermarkets
• Specialty
items from many different countries such as vegemite from Australia
They
have free parking at the front of the supermarket.
If
you take the Hibiya Line to Hiroo Station get out of the station at
Exit 2. Then ask somebody to point you in the right direction. It
is about a 1 minute walk. The more non-Japanese people you see the
closer you are getting the supermarket! More pregnant non-Japanese
people can be found in this location than in the rest of Japan put
together! You'll see what I mean when you get there.
Upstairs
above the supermarket there is a newsagency/bookstore/giftstore
with all sorts of imported items. It is definitely worth a visit.
They also have a noticeboard upstairs where you can find all sorts
of useful information or post your own message for 5 days. You
need to ask their permission and get your notice stamped with the
date on it. After 5 days they take it down.
If
you order over ¥10 000 worth of goods you can get your groceries
delivered for free.
